"Boys are mean," she cries into his neck as she wraps her arms around him and buries her face into his neck. She knows she sounds like she's twelve again, but she doesn't care. It hurts and she knows that being with Charles will make it all better. Or at least it won't hurt quite as much. Why does it hurt so much? It wasn't like she's been looking forward to this for weeks. Ever since he asked her to go. And that thought pulls a sob out of her. Did he ask her just to make fun of her? Is that why he's here with some other girl?
